This is my tall vase project. It is a small vase with a narrow neck, a wide lip and a narrow body. It is glazed a dark shiny green. For this project I really had to work on pulling a tall cylinder, using choking to help achieve height because after a certain number of pulls I was not able to put my hands in the cylinder to make it taller. I also focused on pulling a uniform wall when making this vase. I really tried to focus on the form of this vase as I wanted to give it a certain shape which was the second thing that I kept in mind for this project. This vase demonstrates balance with the overall harmony between the glaze and the form which combined with the texture of the vase creates a feeling of balance. I think the dark glaze helps add emphasis to the size and shape of the vase as well. When it came time to glaze it I decided to do a dark cobalt blue which actually ended up turning out more of a dark green but I still like the depth it creates. The dark colors add a feeling of

For this project I made a mug with a pulled handle that is about 5 inches tall and 3 1/2 inches wide with a nice rounded shape to it and a pretty rustic green glaze and some drips of blue all along the outside of the cup as well as all along the lip. To make this project I had to make sure to pull a handle which is something I need to practice. For this mug I mainly focused on pulling a handle that would function well with the proportion of my mug as well as practice my technique of creating a well compressed lip and pleasing to the eye mug shape. I'm very pleased with the overall form of my mug especially compared to past ones I have made. In addition I am proud of how well the handle suits the size of the mug both in thickness and scale. I feel like this mug looks very unified and harmonious because everything goes together well. When I was glazing my mug I decided to do a forest green with a cobalt blue lip which I allowed to drip down the exterior of my mug creating a beautiful contrast of value with the light green base and the drips of dark blue. This mug reminds me to relax and just go with the flow of life and to just let go. Especially with the glaze as it makes me feel grounded and calm with the two color combination.
For this project I worked in a group with Griffin and Hayden. We made a coil pot for Mr.Brown to hold his whistles. It is a simple pinch pot that is about 5 inches by 6 inches with a nice wide base. on the outside we added a plaque that we stamped "Mr. B" on as well. When making this project we wanted to focus on shape and form so that the project could actually function for the purpose we intended it to. Therefore we made sure you could fit your fist in it and that it was pleasing to the eye. By adding the sign on the front it gave the overall pinch pot a feel of harmony and uniqueness that we thought would give it more meaning. That way it better shaped Mr. B's experience when using it! When it came time to glaze it Hayden decided to dip only the top half in brown glaze leaving the rest without. This also gave the pinch pot a nice texture with the glazed part contrasting with the rough unglazed part. Overall I think Mr. Brown will really appreciate the effort we put into this project especially because it serves a purpose. This project also challenged me as I had to work with some people that I didn't know but in the end it all turned out really well! For my second project I made another bowl. It is slightly smaller than my first with a wider and shallower base that is about 4 inches by 3 inches with a simple white glaze and blue drips all around the inside of the bowl. When making my second bowl I learned that it is important not to make your base too thin otherwise you will have a hard time opening and creating a specific shape. I also learned how the rib tool makes the bowl look a certain way. When creating this bowl I started out with a pretty small amount of clay as I wanted to mainly focus on color and balance with the glaze along with movement of the way I applied the glaze. In addition I made a bowl without using the rib tool in order to see how the absence of that specific tool would affect the overall form of my bowl. When it came time to glaze I decided to try adding some drop of black glaze on top of a white dipped bowl in order to create movement throughout the bowl and to add a nice deep blue color after it got fired. While I am not very pleased with my second bowl in terms of progress I know that this is all a part of the process of advancing in my ceramic journey as failing over and over will allow me to re evaluate what I need to change in order to get better and grow. Even though I feel frustrated when I get on the wheel this bowl will always make me feel calm due to its cool colors and the symbolism it holds of my struggles during that time I made the bowl. This is my first bowl project as an intermediate in ceramics. It is a round bowl and about 5 inches by 4 inches with actual feet attached on the bottom raising the bowl off the table with a dark forest green glaze. When making this bowl on the wheel I made sure to focus on making a shape that better resembled a bowl like form. I made sure that I pulled a wall that was able to be shaped into a bowl with my rib tool. I also wanted it to have a sense of unity and balance so I made actual feet attachments for the 'footing' part of my bowl. When doing this I also used only 3 feet as it helped achieve my goal of harmony for the overall feel of the project. When it came time to glaze I really emphasized making sure my color was evenly distributed amongst the bowl which turned out very well. All in all this bowl represents a new beginning for me as it is not something I would usually do and I like how it is unique and different then just another bowl as the feet add character. When I see this project I will always feel reminded that is is ok to do things differently and to just go with the flow because at first when I realized I had made the base too thin I was upset but I worked with it and made something unique:) |
